LIGHT AND RANDOM CHOCOLATE CAKE

Remember back in school, there was always a "cool" gang?  They always had the coolest shoes, their socks were always casually half mast and they had boys signatures on their school bags (I went to an all girl school with a strict uniform code - it was hard to be individual!!!!) - well recently all the "cool" bloggers have been baking up a storm from Dan Lepard's new book Short and Sweet, and I have to admit that I was feeling a bit left out (tragic I know!!!!). Well, all is right with the world and I can still aspire to the "cool" club, my son bought me his book for Christmas :-)).

Dom over at Belleau Kitchen challenged us to randomly choose a recipe from one of our new Christmas books and blog about it - nice one!  Then I thought my luck was really in when the book opened at The alchemist's chocolate cake which has half the fat and quarter of the carbs of a normal uniced chocolate cake, relying on blended tinned pears to provide the moisture and texture, and therefore being perfect for Chele's We Should Cocoa Challenge which this month involved chocolate bakes and healthy in the same sentence! I think I'm a bit late on Chele's challenge but am going to chance my arm!!!

The link to Dan's recipe is here, but I have to say that unless I were under doctor's orders I'd just have a small slice of a normal cake instead.

Oh dear I guess I'm not a cool blogger then, lol!

Short and sweet is a lovely book. Were you not keen on the cake then?!

Well, I guess there's a first time for everything - I've never been in the 'cool' set before!!! I actually quite liked this cake, but I can understand that you didn't. I found that the texture was different to a 'full fat' type cake - it was less soft and fluffy, and obviously less buttery, but I still liked it!

The cake looks pretty good to me. I know it was supposed to be on the lighter side, but chocolate frosting fixes everything. I went to an all girl school too. Strict uniform dress code, so we were all on the same level. Believe or not, the nuns were wonderful. Smart, kind ,patient. My brothers went to another school with a different order of nuns. They do not have anything nice to say about their teachers. lol

Wow. Two blog challenges is one swift hit! When I first got the book I felt quite intimidated by it but once I got cooking from it Ive not looked back. I think it's going to be one of those books that every household has. A massive cool gang!! Thanks for taking part honey. The cake looks amazing (I've not made it yet) but I can imagine how glorious it tastes!!

Kelly-Jane, you are beyond cool!!! The cake wasn't popular here, not rich or moist enough for my lot.

C, I think that some chocolate chunks in there would improve things!

FBMKW, Agree on the frosting. I think we had both type of nuns in my school, I kinda remember the mean ones most though!!

Dom, I feel that I need to do some study with the book before I get started properly on it!

Nuns & school uniforms in the early Madonna days, I was told to pray for her because she was corrupting me :-) This low-carb cake sounds perfect for a diabetic I know who loves chocolate, thank you!

I was totally never in the cool gang at school- I remember a kindly older kid telling me on my very first day at secondary school that my knee high white socks shouldn't be worn knee high as I was wearing them but pushed down to the ankle to 'be cool'. Horrified I promptly pushed them down hoping no one saw. Reliving that memory has caused me lots of trauma- please can I have two slices of your yummy cake now??

I'm with you on this one. A chocolate cake should not be low cal. If you're looking for a healthy chocolate cake, you should just eat an apple! Other than this one, I love Dan's book.

ha ha, love the cool club. I've got the book but have only managed to make a couple of recipes from it, don't consider myself anywhere near cool! Great looking cake and well done on bagging two challenges in one.

All I have to see is chocolate and I am here. Looks delish! I hope all is well.

I've always thought it might be nice to be cool but then I've always thought it'd be nice to have a low-fat chocolate cake that was just as good as a full fat one. I must say I'd eat this one quite happily though.

It looks good and sounds good... so it's a shame if it misses the mark slightly. Oh well - that's part of the fun of making new things - discovering what works and doesn't.

Haha I have never heard of cool girls having boys signatures on their bags before!!that's so funny, sorry the cake didn't turn out great. It was sounding pretty promising when you mentioned the tinned pears, I could see how that could work but you're right give me a double fudge chocolate cake any day of the week!

Pears sound like an interesting addition to this cake. You've always been cool to me :)

I HAVE heard so much about this Short and Sweet cook book! Glad you got a copy and are now 'in with the in crowd'! ;-) ... alas, it's nowhere to be found in the States. Perhaps this Spring it will make the jump over the ocean and onto the best seller lists.
The cake looks a stunner!

Clare said...

Oh I hadn't even heard of that book, I feel like I should go buy it straight away!! The chocolate cake sounds nice, I like the idea of using pears-interesting! Great blog btw!

Hope springs eternal Brownieville Girl hey? I am always keen to try out recipes like this, but very often feel just the way you did. Thank you for trying it out for me - I very much trust your judgement. I think the addition of pears is inspired though, it would also increase the fibre content of the cake very well. Pears and chocolate makes me think of Nigella's Chocolate Pear Pudding....lol nothing low-fat about that;)

PS, I was never a 'cool kid' but did manage to be one of the kids the cool kids liked lol or at least tolerated {phew} and I don't have this book, but I hope you'll still like me;)

Have never been in the cool gang in my life, so not quite sure how I feel about being in it now ;-) I agree with you about this cake, it was OK, but I don't have a burning ambition to make it again. Interesting title for you post, what has poor Dom done to deserve a ramming from you?

Thanks guys :-)

Morto Choclette!!!! All fixed now (she says blushing!)
